Arthur Ralph Astbury Collection: Rebuilding of 'Snowdon', Simla. Photographer(s): Unknown
- Scope & Content:
-
Grey soft-covered album measuring 310x425mm, with 'Snowdon-Simla 1903/04' handwritten on front cover. Prints are lightly tipped-in and the majority are captioned. Prints 1-29 are views in Shimla, mainly of Snowdon, the residence of the Commander-in-Chief. Lord Kitchener ordered extensive rebuilding of the house in 1903 and these photographs show building work in progress and after completion. Prints 40-57 show the Punjab Agricultural College at Lyallpur (present-day Faisalabad). The remaining views are mainly unidentified snapshots. Arthur Ralph Astbury (1880-1973) joined the Indian Public Works Department in 1900.
