Arthur Ralph Astbury Collection: 'The Uhl River Hydro-Electric Project'

Scope & Content:

Photograph album measuring 230x383mm, with card covers, leather spine and cord ties. Letterpress title on front cover reads 'Government of the Punjab Public Works Department Hydro-Electric Branch. The Uhl River Hydro-Electric Project 1925-1932'. Prints are inserted on corner hinges and have handwritten captions in ink beneath each photograph. While the main part of the album documents the construction of the Uhl River Hydro-Electric System, the earlier prints (mounted on loose cards inserted at the start of the album) relate to different subjects, and the collection as a whole can be broken down as follows:

Print 1 View of Palampur Station.

Prints 2-9 Snapshots of the construction of the gallery road along the cliff-face at Wangtu.

Prints 10-12 Chaba hydro-electric power house near Shimla, and tunnel mouth at Basantpur.

Prints 13-18 Photographs relating to urban sanitation at Bhera and Amritsar, c.1919.

Prints 19-97 Construction of the Uhl River Hydro-Electric System.
