Biographical note: William Vernon Emanuel (1914-1940) was the author of The Wild Asses. A Journey through Persia (London: 1939), and acted as interpreter and officer in charge of equipment, commisariat and supplies to the 1938 Swat and Afghanistan expedition. He was killed early in the Second World War. Lectured at the Royal Central Asian Society on 18 Jan 1939, and at the Royal Geographical Society on 6 Feb 1939. See also his article in the Illustrated London News of 24 December 1938, pp. 1189-91.
