Holmes Collection: Album of miscellaneous views, mostly in Kashmir. Photographer(s): Holmes, Randolph Bezzant
- Scope & Content:
-
Mottled brown post-bound album, 332x430mm, containing prints mounted 5 or 6 to a page with captions handwritten in white ink. The album has modern typed labels on the front fixed endpaper listing the locations depicted in the photographs, with the addition of a colour coded finding aid in which coloured circles stuck on album pages correspond to the following locations:
1. Trek to Nanga Parbat, 1945 & Kashmir scenes, 1920-1930s [Green].
2. Peshawar District, City & Cantonment, 1910-1930s [Yellow].
3. Khyber Pass, 1910-1930s [Red].
4. Taj Mahal, Agra. Opening ceremonies at New Delhi, 1931. War Memorial at New Delhi [Blue].
The album has been captioned by Holmes' sister, Gwen Tobin, and she is probably responsible for a number of the photographs although it is difficult to identify these precisely.
Randolph Bezzant Holmes was born in Peshawar in 1888 and joined the photographic firm of his father William Dacia Holmes, taking over its management on the retirement of the latter in 1912. Several other family members were also involved in the running of the firm, which produced a comprehensive visual record of the North-West Frontier Province. The studio was closed after partition and Holmes retired to New Zealand, where he died in 1973.
