Sir James David Sifton Collection: The Earthquake of the 15th January 1934 in Bihar and Nepal
- Scope & Content:
-
Red cloth album measuring 241x328mm, with title as above stamped in gold on front cover, and photographers' names in bottom right-hand corner, from the collection of Sir James Sifton. Prints are mounted two to a page (recto only), with neat handwritten captions beneath each image. The album contains views of buildings and bridges damaged in the earthquake which struck Nepal and Bihar in 1934, together with more general photographs of land fissures, sand vents, etc., created by the earthquake. It is not known which of the three listed figures took which of the photographs, and all the images have been provisionally listed as photographs by J.A. Dunn in the print catalogue.
Sir James David Sifton (1878-1952), entered the Indian Civil Service in 1902. He served as Governor of Bihar and Orissa 1932-36 and Governor of Bihar 1936-37.
Photographers = J.A. Dunn, J.B. Auden;
