Scope & Content:

'...The most prominent one is of Buddha, 7 feet in height, and 7½ feet broad, and which is now worshipped as Bhim Sen. The face is 16 inches broad...' (Cunningham and Garrick, op. cit., p.48). Photograph probably taken in the 1870s: Cunningham, writing after his 1880 visit, states that '...Mr Beglar saw it 8 years ago', and this was presumably when he photographed it. It is seen here with the base still below ground level. Caddy's view (see print 78a), taken at a later date, shows the sculpture at a more advanced stage of excavation.
