Fragment of inscribed rock from Bhatinda, Hisar District. Photographer: Garrick, Henry Baily Wade
- Scope & Content:
-
Reproduced as a collotype in H.B.W. Garrick, 'Report of a tour in the Panjab and Rajputana in 1883-84' (A.S.I. vol. XXIII, Calcutta, 1887), pl. xxvii, and described p. 8: 'The inscription, until December 1880, was concealed in a corner of the inner vault, or sanctum sanctorum, of Baba Haji Rattan's Tomb. In December 1880 it was, however, discovered by Sir Robert Egerton, K.C.S.I., the late Lieutenant-Governor of the Panjab, then on a visit to Bhatinda, and conveyed by His Honor to Lahore. By subsequent enquiry I learnt that this inscription was handed over before its discoverer's departure from India, to Sirdar Attar Singh, C.I.E., Chief of Badhaur, to whose kindness in sending me the stone I am indebted for the photographs and impressions I have been able to secure.' Although Bloch's list credits this photograph to W. Caney, this suggests strongly that Garrick was the photographer (see also print 921).
