Theodore Bloch, in A list of the photographic negatives of Indian antiquities in the collection of the Indian Museum: with which is incorporated the list of similar negatives in the possession of the India Office (Calcutta: 1900), notes that the sculptures are 'said to be in Major Deane's possession.' Harold Arthur Deane, Chief Political Officer with the Chitral Relief Force, is described by Lawrence Austine Waddell, who had been sent on a deputation to investigate archaeological remains in the area in 1895, as a 'well-known archaeologist, who for many years has been zealously and most successfully exploring the Buddhist remains of Peshawar and its frontier countries' (Dr Waddell's First Progress Report on Deputation to Swat, Bengal General Proceedings (Miscellaneous), October 1895, IOR/P/4727, pp. 289-297).
