General view of the Buddhist rock-cut temples at Nadsur. Photographer: Henry Cousens
- Scope & Content:
-
View looking across the valley towards the line of caves on the far side. The caves at Nadsur were first visited by a European in January 1890, when the Rev. J. Abbott of the Marathi Mission at Bombay discovered them while on tour. He informed Cousens of the find, 'and as his descriptions of them led me to consider them interesting and worth a visit, I determined to wind up my season's tour with an investigation of them instead of continuing my march into Kathiawad. We consequently left Viramgam after finishing work there, and arrived at Nadsur on the 16th April 1890' (Henry Cousens, An account of the Caves at Nadsur and Karsambla, Archaeological Survey of Western India Reports, old series no. 12, Bombay, 1891).
