Scope & Content:

Maroon half-leather album, measuring 384 mm x 345 mm, containing 68 prints numbered D.881-D.884 (lacking D.871), mounted on board printed with decorative borders, with neat handwritten captions beneath each image. The prints are preceded by a copy of the annual progress report of the Archaeological Survey, United Provinces and Punjab Circle, for the year 1903-04. Although the photographs for the year are listed in the report as Nos. 811-948, only prints up to No.885 are included in this album; the remainder are bound in a separate volume (Photo 1007/8).

The photographs comprise architectural views of Fatehpur Sikri, Agra, Lucknow, Lahore and Delhi, taken by Ghulam Rasul Beg, Bhairon Bakhsh and Sohan Lal of the Archaeological Survey.

Ghulam Rasul Beg was temporarily in charge of the Circle after the death of E. W. Smith, and again after the sudden death of his successor, E. B .S. Shepherd. W. H. Nicholls was eventually appointed Archaeological Surveyor of the Circle, which was amalgamated with the Punjab Circle in the course of the year, with Nicholls based in Agra, and Dr Vogel as Superintendent, in Lahore.
