The first journey proceeded north from Chengtu [成都] through Kwanhsien [灌縣] and Mowchow [茂州] to Sungpan [松潘], returning to Chengtu though Lungan [龍安] and Mienchow [綿州], all in Ssuchuan Province. The second journey proceeded south-west from Chengtu through Yachow [雅州] to Tatsienlu [打箭爐], thence west to Batang [巴搪], and south through Atuntze [阿墩子] to Talifu [大理府] in Yunnan Province. The maps show relief, hydrology and settlements in the vicinity of the routes, and include extensive notes on local topography. Place-names are given in Wade-Giles Romanisation. 5 of the sheets comprise an index to the remaining 35 sheets.
