Title:

Archaeological Survey of India Collections: Madras, 1900-1901. Photographer(s): Archaeological Survey of India

Scope & Content:

Brown quarter-bound leather volume measuring 393x450mm, containing prints mounted on board. A number of the prints have become detached from the binding. The photographs are preceded by a copy of Alexander Rea's printed report of the survey's acitivities for the period 1900-1901. The prints are numbered 372-424, forming part of the sequence from Photo 1008/4. Inserted in a pocket at the front of the volume are two reports dating from the 1870s and 1880s relating to Robert Sewell's excavations at Amravati and other sites in the Krishna District: these do not have any connection with the prints in the album itself.

The volume contains views of temple architecture in Kerala at Kalugumalai, Nanguneri, Tirunelveli, Somapalem, Kanchipuram, Mamallapuram, Beypore, Kunniparamba, Elatur, Talakolatur, Varakal and Thaligai.
