Archaeological Survey of India Collections: Western India 1894-96. Photographer(s): Cousens, Henry
- Scope & Content:
-
Blue half-calf volume (spine and front board detached) measuring 362 x 320 mm. The photographs are preceded by a copy of Cousens printed reports of the survey's activities 1894-95 and 1895-96. Although the volume is given the inclusive date of 1894-96, the earlier part of this period was spent by Cousens in a preliminary survey of the territories of the Nizam of Hyderabad, and as he stated in a letter of 14 March 1896: 'The tour through His Majesty the Nizam's dominions was made with a view to collecting information towards the compiling of preliminary lists in that State, the travel was rapid and the usual detail survey work was suspended...There are thus no photographs to accompany the report from last season. What few half and quarter plate negatives were taken were intended only as photographic notes to assist me in the compilation.' All the photographs in this volume, which relate to Cousens' tour of Sindh (Pakistan), were taken in early 1896, his fieldwork for that season lasting from February to May 1896. The volume contains architectural photographs from Hala, Hyderabad, Khudabad, Matiari, Moro, Tatta. There are also few photographs of examples of modern Hala pottery.
