Archaeological Survey of India Collections: Western India 1897-98. Photographer(s): Cousens, Henry
- Scope & Content:
-
Blue half-calf volume (front board detached) measuring 360 x 320 mm. The photographs are preceded by a copy of Cousens' printed report of the survey's activities for the year ending 30 June 1898. Cousens had planned to continue his survey work in Sindh (Pakistan) in the 1897-98 season, 'but it was impossible to carry on excavation work over these large areas without extra funds, and since Government were not prepared to incur any further expenditure last year, I submitted an alternative programme allowing the further prosecution of the Sind work to stand over for the present. This alternative programme provided for a tour through the eastern parst of the Satara and the western portions of the Sholapur district, and the examination of the country round Bassein, Sopara, and Borivli in the Thana district.' The volume therefore contains architectural views at Bassein, Gursala, Katar Khatav, Khatav, Malsiras, Parol, Segaon, Singnapur, Sopara, Velapur.
Photographs taken by Henry Cousens and/or Indian assistants.
