'Neame and Chapman went to the town and Jong to take photos, and found many interesting subjects...The outer walls of the Jong have in many places crumbled away and the whole of it is pretty bad repair, except the chief temple, which is reputed to be 300 or 400 years old...' (Lhasa Mission Diary 15 August 1936).
