Nizam-oo-deen's Tomb, Delhi. Photographer: Saché, John Edward
- Scope & Content:
-
A photograph, from the 'Album of Indian Views', of the Dargah or tomb of Nizam-ud-Din Auliya taken by John Edward Saché. View of the marble doorway and screen at the entrance to Nizam-ud-Din's Tomb. Shaikh Nizam-ud-Din Chisti was a great sufi mystic, a spiritual descendant of Moinuddin Chisti. The tomb built in 1325 comprises a small square chamber surrounded by verandahs. Alterations and additions have been made over time, such as the arches and lattice screens in the inner sanctum added by Firuz Shah Tughluq (r.1351-1388). Much of the present structure is due to Faridun Khan, a high-ranking noble, who reconstructed the tomb in 1562 and added the octagonal drum and dome. The Dargah is the focus of an annual festival in November and is one of the most of the revered shrines in the city.
