A photograph, from the ‘Album of Indian Views’, of the Residency at Lucknow, taken by John Edward Saché in the 1860s. General view. The Residency Building, built c.1800 for the British Resident in Lucknow, was a key site of the Siege of Lucknow during the Uprising of 1857. Approximately 3000 British inhabitants took refuge within the complex. It contained numerous buildings constructed for British officials and soldiers, including a banquet hall, a church, offices, stores, stables, and private houses. The surviving ruins convey the grandeur of the original structure and provide an insight to the the events of 1857.
