Shuttleworth Collection: Archaeological views of Sri Lanka and Southern India. Photographer(s): Shuttleworth, Henry Lee Hadwen
- Scope & Content:
-
Collection of 86 loose prints (including a number of duplicates), the majority uncaptioned, but mostly relating to Sri Lanka. The material can be broken down into the following categories:
Prints 1-21 Albumen print views of Sri Lankan antiquities at Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya, c. 1890s-1900s, by various photographers. These include a portrait of the Ceylon Archaeological Commissioner Harry Charles Purvis Bell standing beside the Prakramabahu sculpture at Polonnaruwa. There is also a series of 11 views of the frescoes of apsaras at Sigiriya, with two examples of the same scene before and after restoration. A number of these copies of the paintings show white marks around the images. These appear to be the marks left by Alexander Murray, who attached tracing paper to the paintings in order to make copies in 1891. A general view of the frescoes reproduced in Bethia N. Bell and Heather M. Bell, H. C. P. Bell Archaeologist of Ceylon and the Maldives (Archetype Publications, Denbigh, 1993), between pages 90-91, also shows these marks. In their text (p. 96) the authors state that restoration work to clean off these marks was undertaken between 1899 and 1904. The photographs of the paintings in this collection were possibly taken by Bell's assistant D. A. L. Perera, who also made copies in oils of the frescoes.
Prints 22-66 Archaeological subjects at Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Mihintale, c. 1920s, probably photographed by H. L. H. Shuttleworth.
Prints 67-79 Miscellaneous views in Sri Lanka, c. 1920s, probably photographed by H. L. H. Shuttleworth.
Prints 80-85 Temple architecture, Southern India, and two photographs of sadhus in the Punjab, c. 1910s-20s, probably photographed by H. L. H. Shuttleworth.
Print 86 Market scene, Burma, c. 1920s, probably photographed by H. L. H. Shuttleworth.
