'The cremation of an old woman on the edge of the village of Chicham. Traditionally bodies were dismembered by monks and thrown into the river to be consumed by fish. Leaving your corpse to feed other sentient beings is a meritorious practice. Occasionally sky burials in which the dismembered bodies are left for vultures have been performed but cremations are now common, fuelled with imported timber. Disposal of corpses is remarkably matter of fact, a reflection of the Buddhist acceptance of reincarnation' (Patrick Sutherland).
