Album of Photographic Views of India. Photographer(s): John Edward Saché, Bourne and Shepherd, Edmund David Lyon
- Scope & Content:
-
Half-leather bound album, measuring 313 x 370 mm, marbled endpapers, edges gilt, with leather label reading Photographs laid down on upper board, business card of 'James Wilson, Editor, Indian Daily News,' laid down on front pastedown. The album contains 49 albumen print views, tipped down at the corners one to a page (recto only), mainly of Indian architecture at Delhi (prints 1-16), Fatehpur Sikri (Prints 21-30), Agra and Sikandra (prints 31-34) and views at Bombay (prints 36-41). Most of these are signed and numbered in the negative by Saché, with letterpress caption labels, presumably cut out from the firm's printed catalogue, pasted beneath the photographs. The unsigned prints, which also have letterpress labels, are almost certainly also by Saché. In addition to this, there are three other prints, two by Edmund David Lyon and one panoramic view of the 1877 Delhi Durbar by Bourne and Shepherd. These latter appear to have been added at a later date, the Lyon views being mounted on card and attached to the verso of pages. A few pages in the middle of the album are blank, possibly reserved for additional prints, since there is no sign of photographs having been removed.
