Jute. (Baling for export). Vol. IV. Johnston and Hoffmann, Calcutta. Photographer(s): Johnston and Hoffmann
- Scope & Content:
-
Commercially produced photograph album (volume four of four), measuring 208 x 310 mm, half-bound in blue and green cloth, with title as above stamped in gilt on upper board. The volume contains 22 gelatin silver prints, mounted one to a page on card (recto only), with letterpress captions printed beneath each image. The four volumes in the set, totalling 89 prints, document each stage in the process of jute manufacture, from growing the crop to export of finished bales. The fourth volume records the movement of jute by bullock cart, to a press-house (probably in Calcutta), the sorting, pressing and baling of the fibre, and transportation of finished bales to the Kidderpore Docks for export. Many of the views in the collection are reproduced as plates in D. R. Wallace, The Romance of Jute (2nd edition, London and Calcutta, 1928).
