Photo 1184/1

Green cloth-bound photograph album, stamped Photos in gilt on upper board, measuring 307 x 410 mm, and containing 191 prints relating to the professional and family life of Lieutenant-Colonel Stuart Hill Godfrey (1861-1941), Indian Political Service 1892-1915. The early photographs in the album (prints 1-44) relate to Godfrey's posting in Iran in the early 1890s, where he served as Assistant Resident at Bushehr under (Sir) Adelbert Cecil Talbot (1845-1920), whose daughter Guendolen he subsequently married. In 1900 he became Assistant to the British Resident in Kashmir and the following year was appointed Political Agent in Zhob. From 1902 he served as Political Agent for Dir, Swat and Chitral. The later photographs in the album record travels in Kashmir and life and scenery in the North-West Frontier Province (particularly at Chitral and Malakand) in the early years of the 20th century. The album also contains many family snapshots of his wife and children, taken in both India and England. Only prints 39-44 are specifically credited to Godfrey, but it has been assumed that the bulk of the amateur material in the album is his work.

The complete collection comprises Photo 1184/1-5. See in particular Photo 1184/2, which appears to have been compiled concurrently with the present album, with much overlapping of subject matter.
