Katakis Collection: Troubled Land. Twelve days across America. Photographer(s): Michael Katakis
- Scope & Content:
-
Collection of 45 loose prints documenting America in the immediate aftermath of the destruction of the World Trade Center, New York, on 11 September 2001. The series consists of views of the memorials and missing persons appeals seen in New York after the tragedy, and a series of portraits of people encountered in Katakis' travels across the country in late September 2001. In his introduction to these prints, the photographer writes:
'Like millions of people around the world the events of September 11 in New York City, Virginia and Pennsylvania left me saddened, confused and numb. After seeing pictures of the tragedies repeated on the television networks I wondered if the country, or I had changed in some way. On September 14th I set out across America to find out. I wanted to know if the country could be as reflectiveas it was reactive or if we could could discuss why this had happened and if our actions in other parts of the world had somehow contributed to such misery here at home. After 12 days I have more questions than answers and now rather than ask if the country has changed I wonder if it can change...'
