Lucas Collection: Photographic record of the world tour of Charles James and Morton P. Lucas, 1877-79. Volume 2, India and Kashmir. Photographer(s): Bourne, Samuel
- Scope & Content:
-
Black full leather album measuring 565 x 450 mm, stamped in gilt within rules on upper cover, India & Kashmir. 2. C.J.L. & M.P.L. All edges gilt. The album contains 197 albumen prints purchased from commercial photographers and recording places visited by the brothers Charles James and Morton P. Lucas in the course of their travels in India during their world tour of 1877-79. The albums in this collection were compiled by their mother and are neatly captioned in ink, with the dates when the various locations were visited also noted. Most of the photographs themselves are earlier, the majority acquired from the Bourne and Shepherd studio and dating from the 1860s. Among the principal places visited between February and November 1878 (the period covered by this album) were Allahabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Bharatpur, Dig, Mathura, Jaipur, Amber, Delhi, Lahore and, in a lengthy interlude in Kashmir: Srinagar and the Sind Valley. Charles Lucas selected most of these views at the Bourne and Shepherd studio in Calcutta on 30 December 1878, a visit described in a letter to his parents: described in one of Lucas' diary letters to his parents: '...After breakfast spent nearly the whole morning at Bourne & Sheppards [sic] the photographers, first having my photo taken in Kashmir dress [see print 196 in this album and also Photo 1224/8] then choosing views of all the places we had been to up country. I shall spend a small fortune on photos before I get home but they will be a lasting souvenir of the places we have seen, so it will be money well spent & will in a way assist me to explain what we have seen...' (Photo 1224/7, vol. 2, p. 206).
The album covers the period from February-November 1878, during which time the Lucas brothers travelled through northern India and Kashmir. Most of the photographs, however, are a good deal earlier, the majority acquired from the Bourne and Shepherd studio and dating from the 1860s. The album contains 197 views, by Samuel Bourne and other commercial photographers, of Allahabad, Cawnpore, Lucknow, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Bharatpur, Dig, Mathura, Jaipur, Amber, Delhi, Amritsar, Lahore, Murree, Srinagar, Sind Valley, Baltal, Zoji La.
