Charles Lucas, in one of his diary letters home to his parents, records purchasing his China views in Hong Kong on 6 March 1879, but does not identify the photographer: 'Up at 8 & finished writing up this letter before tiffin then went to photographers to buy views etc. of Hong Kong Canton & Macao...' (Photo 1224/7, vol. 2, p. 19).
Provenance. The Lucas Collection (Photo 1224/1-7, Photo 1225/1-7) were purchased at auction by John Hillelson at the sale of the contents of Broomhall Manor House, Warnham, near Horsham (the family home of Captain C. E. Lucas), 8-9 November 1967. The six volumes of Photo 1224/1-6 were lot 855 (£14), the seven volumes of Photo 1225/1-7 were lot 857 (£16).
