Letters sent home by Charles James and Morton P. Lucas during their round the world tour of 1877-79, in five volumes. These letters accompany the six volumes of photographs (Photo 1224/1-6) acquired during their travels. Volumes 1-3 are fair copies, 4-5 are (an imcomplete?) set of original letters and journal notes.
Photo 1224/7(1). This volume covers the period 27 September 1877 to 24 July 1878. It includes letters written on the journey from Southampton to Bombay, and from Ootacamund, Trichinopoly, Tanjore, Ceylon, Calcutta, Agra, Bharatpur, Delhi, Jhelum, Rawalpindi, Srinagar, Bandipur, Gulmarg and Leh.
Photo 1224/7(2). This volume covers the period 31 July 1878 to 28 February 1879 and contains letters written from Kashmir, Lahore, Calcutta, Bombay, Penang, Singapore, Madras and Hong Kong.
Photo 1224/7(3). This volume covers the period 21 February 7 July 1879 and contains letters written from Hong Kong, Shanghai, Yokohama, Nikko and San Francisco.

Provenance. The Lucas Collection (Photo 1224/1-7, Photo 1225/1-7) was purchased at auction by John Hillelson at the sale of the contents of Broomhall Manor House, Warnham, near Horsham (the family home of Captain C. E. Lucas), 8-9 November 1967. The six volumes of Photo 1224/1-6 were lot 855 (£14), the seven volumes of Photo 1225/1-7 were lot 857 (£16).
