[Forest Trees of India. No. 21.] Bassia latifolia [Madhuca longifolia], mahua tree. Forest Officer's camp, Puchmari, Central Provinces. Photographer: Webber, Thomas Wingfield
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Landscape Photography
Camp scene, with tents in a clearing, one tent pitched at the base of a mahua tree. A European man (probably Webber: compare print 57) sits reading in front of the tent on the left. The mahua is characterised in a note as 'a splendid handsome & shady tree.' With additional note written on album page beside print: 'Bassia latifolia. The celebrated 'mahua' tree is uneversally [sic] found planted singly all over the plains of India. Its flowers are very valuable having a sweet juicy calyx which forms a useful article of diet for men & animals and from it the best of arack can be distilled. The trees are all owned by villagers & produce a regular annual income to the owners who collect & store the fruit.'
