Main altar and ritual objects, interior of replica of Golden Pavilion of Temple of Jehol in Manchukuo (Century of Progress, Chicago). Photographer: Keystone View Company
- Scope & Content:
-
Stereoscopic view of the temple replica installed at the Century of Progress Exposition, Chicago 1933-34: It was the wish of Mr. Vincent Bendix, a trustee of the Century of Progress Exposition, for a Lama temple, that sent Dr. Sven Hedin, the noted Swedish explorer on a two-year search through Mongolia. There seemed to be no more suitable place than Jehol, about 140 miles from Peiping. Jehol was the summer residence of the great Manchu Emperors and the site of a group of splendid temple buildings. The magnificent temple-monastery of Potala built by a Manchu emperor of China 166 years ago, was chosen and a Chinese architect employed to reproduce exactly its most sumptuous sanctuary, the Golden Pavilion. In 28,000 pieces, each numbered, the replica reached Chicago. It was erected on the World's Fair grounds. A second replica will later be erected in Stockholm ... Nowhere in the western hemisphere is there anything like this, a respledent sight never to be forgotten and the finest example of Chinese Lama architecture. [From note on reverse of mount.]
