Beynon Collection: 'Unveiling of the Centenary and War Memorial Bell. 2-3rd Q.A.O. Gurkha Rifles. The Khyber, 18th February 1926. (With some views of the Khyber and Waziristan). Photographer(s): Holmes, Randolph Bezzant
- Scope & Content:
-
Soft covered photograph album measuring 270 x 396 mm, titled in gilt on front cover as above, and containing 19 prints (two loose), the majority with letterpress captions beneath the prints. A number of the prints are also captioned and signed by the photographer in the negative, and the photographer's label, reading 'R. B. Holmes Peshawar N.W.F.P. India', is attached to the inside of the rear cover. The two loose photographs are views of the Gurkha War Memorial at the Recruitment Depot at Kunra Ghat, Gorakhpur. A letter to Beynon inserted in the album, from C. H. A. Tuck and dated 30th September 1926, records the reasons for assembling the album:
'My Dear General,
On behalf of the 2nd Battn. I have asked the Army & Navy Stores to send you an album of photos. The chief items of interest are pictures of the Bell. I thought it would be nice to send these albums to widows & relatives of officers who fell in the War. We added some Waziristan pictures to make up the albums, and I think they have been appreciated. The Bell, as I think you know, was paid for from the old Centenary Fund, as also the cost of the albums.
The groups of officers were taken immediately after the bell had been handed over.
Captain Boucher, commanding the Depot, told me that your portrait had arrived in very good order. I believe I did thank you for it, when you told me it was being sent. I do so again, on behalf of all officers of the 2nd Battalion. Our G.O.'s Club was burnt down more than a year ago. They lost everything they had, unfortunately, including all their pictures. I hope the Club will be rebuilt next year. I know that if you could spare them a photo of yourself to re-start their new Club it would be very greatly appreciated.
Yours sincerely
C. H. A. Tuck [Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Harold Amys Tuck, 3rd Gurkha Rifles].'
