Bailey Collection: Photographs of Middle East, Kashmir and Assam. Photographer(s): Bailey, Frederick Marshman
- Scope & Content:
-
Black full leather bound album with padded boards, measuring 290x230mm. Volume generally in firm condition, apart from some wear at spine. Prints are inserted in aperture mounts, either four or two to a page, depending on size. Most of the prints are captioned in pencil on the mounts or album pages and some prints also have captions on the reverse. The album contains a miscellaneous mix of material, which can be broken down as follows:
1. Small snapshot views of Iraq, with a few of Iran, taken around the time of Bailey's period as political officer in Shushtar in 1917. Some of the prints show the aftermath of General's Townshend's Mesopotamia Campaign. (Prints 1-15, 27-42, 59-74, 87-102).
2. Scenes on the North-West Frontier Province, c. 1916, mainly relating to falconry, but with one portrait of Sir George Roos-Keppel and the Khan of Teri. (Prints 16-26).
3. Views in Kashmir, c. 1917. (Prints 43-52, 75-76, 85-86, 103-112).
4. Photographs taken during Bailey's Expedition to Assam and Tibet, 1913. These are duplicates (often in better condition) of photographs in Mss Eur F 157/481 (and a few from 480 and 482). (Prints 53-58, 77-84, 114-117).
