The diary includes records and information on Lieutenant-Colonel Burton's career, interest in Shikar (hunting) and work on conservationism in India and South Asia.
The records and entries relating to his career in the British, and later Indian Army cover the period 1887-1923 and include information on his time at Sandhurst, records of his commissions and service and records of medals and awards received
The entries relating to Shikar include detailed statistical records of every hunting trip including location, date, number of guns used and number of each different animal hunted and daily diary entries giving more general information on the conditions each day.
Also included in the diary are correspondence and entries relating to Burton's growing interest in and work on conservation and preservation of animals and wild life in India.
Other information in the diary includes press cuttings, details of the scientific names for wildlife and animals, and a daily diary kept in March 1926 whilst recovering from a fall in which he broke his right leg and wrist.
