The diary records Lieutenant-Colonel Burton's trip to New Zealand 27 November 1936-29 May 1938 to explore the local wild life and fishing. The diary comprises daily entries of the along with sketches, photographs, press cuttings, articles and leaflets.
The route to and from New Zealand included: Jamaica, Panama, Pitcairn Islands, South and North Islands of New Zealand, Stewart Island, Fiji, Suva, Levuka, Australia, Tasmania, Ceylon and India.
Items of note within the diary include:
- A list of the birds to be found on Stewart Island (folios 71-73);
- A copy of the translation of 'the rubai'yat of Omar the Fisherman' (folios 87a-87n);
- Examples of pressed leaves (folio 87o).
