Full-length standing portrait of David Octavius Hill (1802-1870) and William Borthwick Johnstone (1804-1868), posed in a doorway. Photograph on printed mount from Hill and Adamson's Calton Stairs calotype studio. The photograph is reproduced in Stevenson (2002), p. 52, where it is stated that 'this photograph may have been taken at Newhaven, rather than Rock House, and could be an exercise in how to form a group, using the doorway as a prop.' However, the pattern of the masonry of the door surround appears to be identical to that in the portrait of Hill (see print 1 in this album), which is generally identified as having been taken at Rock House.
