Memphis — Saqqarah. Photographer: Billiet
- Scope & Content:
-
View looking down into the chamber of a mastaba tomb at Saqqara, photographed in the course of excavation. Two of the diggers, and their chief Roubi, are seen on the left, while Mariette himself is seated in the centre, posed in the act of examining two statues excavated at the site. In the accompanying text, Mariette pays tribute to Roubi, writing that in the sixteen years he had been employed by the Boulaq Museum, this 'fellah illettré' had seen so many antiquities that he had become expert in identifying their age: 'La science doit à Roubi un quart des monuments qui sont la richesse du Musée de Boulaq.'
