Luxor from the river. Photographer: Abney, William de Wiveleslie
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Landscape Photography
View looking along the riverbank towards moored boats and a large house: 'The Temple of Luxor is situated near the bank of the river, though but little of it can be seen as one approaches the town, the modern whitewashed mud houses almost completely shutting out its view. The dahabeahs, however, are usually moored at the only spot from which the tops of the columns of the Great Colonnade are visible, and after ascending the bank a few yards the whole of it comes into sight. Our expedition was located on a small island to the south, from the end of which the annexed view was taken. Directly facing us is the house where Lady Duff Gordon so long resided—an Englishwoman, whose name is a household word among the inhabitants
