Panoramic view composed of two joined prints, looking towards the ruins, with Egyptian labourers engaged in the excavations posed right of centre. The site was extensively excavated by Auguste Mariette from 1859. 'La vue s'étend depuis le fond du sanctuaire, sur la droite, jusqu'aux obélisques, renversés à l'entrée du temple, sur la gauche. L'horizon est fermé par les collines qui marquent la place de l'ancienne enceinte de la ville.'
