View across the rooftops of Cairo, with a minaret in the left foreground and looking towards the Citadel, with the Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque visible in the distance on the skyline. Steegmuller identifies this view as having been taken from a window of the Hotel du Nil, where Flaubert and Du Camp stayed in Cairo (see Francis Steegmuller, 'Flaubert in Egypt' (Penguin Books, London, 1996), plate 4). However, if the photograph was taken by Rochas, as Du Camp himself acknowledges (see introduction), there appears to be little foundation for this assertion. See also print 3 in this collection.
