View looking across the garden towards the rear façade of the building; Gustave Flaubert, Du Camp's companion on this journey, stands in profile in the foreground, heavily bearded and wearing Arab dress. The photograph was taken in a Cairo garden (the garden of the Hotel du Nil in early 1850, according to Francis Steegmuller) and the occasion is referred to in a later letter from Flaubert to his mother: 'I would never allow anyone to photograph me. Max did it once, but I was in Nubian costume, standing, and seen from a considerable distance, in a garden.' (translated by Francis Steegmuller and quoted, without dates, in his 'Flaubert in Egypt' (Penguin Books, London, 1996), facing p. 40, where this photograph is reproduced, but printed in reverse).
