Head-on view (from the east) of the Great Sphinx at Giza, with the pyramids in the background. Flaubert records visiting the Pyramids and the Sphinx with Du Camp (and in a later letter noting the 'excellent photograph that Max has taken' of the latter) on 7 December 1849 (see Francis Steegmuller, 'Flaubert in Egypt' (Penguin Books, London, 1996), pp. 49-51). With additional caption note: 'Taillé par ordre de Thôtmès IV (XVIIIe dynastie). Nommé par les Arabes Abou-el-Houl (le père de l'épouvante). Longueur totale 39 mètres. Contour de la tête au front 27 mètres. Hauteur depuis le ventre jusqu'au sommet de la tête. 17 mètres.' See note on chronology at print 9.
