Nubie. Temple de Tafah (Ancienne Taphis). Photographer: Du Camp, Maxime
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
View of the remains of the small temple at Tafa, looking towards the entrance doorway to the sanctuary, flanked by two columns. For another view of the site, see shelfmark 1786.b.33, volume 2, print 17. This appears to be southern temple, destroyed in the late 19th century. The northern temple was dismantled and re-assembled in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden at Leiden in 1960. Flaubert mentions both in his travel journal: 'Two temples. One, completely inside the village, is used as a dwelling. Both small.' (Francis Steegmuller, 'Flaubert in Egypt' (Penguin Books, London, 1996), p. 147). With additional caption note: 'Aucune légende hiéroglyphique. — Incontestablement romain.'
