Nubie. Forteresse d'Ibrym (ancienne Premmis). Vue prise au sud. Photographer: Du Camp, Maxime
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
View looking towards the fortifications at Qasr Ibrim, seen against the skyline at the summit of a sheer-sided hill. The visit to the fort is mentioned in Flaubert's travel notes: 'In the afternoon [of 31 March 1850], reach ancient Ibrim, on the right bank of the Nile. While Max took a picture of the fort from below, I slowly climbed the side of the hill, breaking my toenails on rough stones that had rolled down from above...The interior is an entire city enclosed within walls...The whole ruin gives off an effluvium of fever, and makes you think of bored people dying of marasmus...' (Francis Steegmuller, 'Flaubert in Egypt' (Penguin Books, London, 1996), p. 143).
