Nubie. Ibsamboul [Abu Simbel]. Colosse oriental du grand Spéos de Phré. Portrait de Ramsès le Grand (Sésostris). Photographer: Du Camp, Maxime
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
Close view from below of the left-hand colossus of the façade of the rock-cut Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel, with an unidentified figure standing on the arm of the statue. Scratched graffiti on the right memorialise the earlier visits of 'Teissonniere 1844' and 'I. Hyde 1 Apr 1819.' This latter was the traveller John Hyde (d. 1825), who, as noted in 'Who was who in Egyptology' (London, 3rd edition, 1995), left his mark on various monuments in Nubia. A lengthy additional caption note lists the dimensions of the various parts of the sculpture.
