View of the impressive octagonal masonry tower of the lighthouse, built above a large accommodation block. This structure was built 1850-54. The top of the older lighthouse which it replaced can be seen in the background. The lighthouse is situated on the Pointe des Baleines, off the northern tip of the Île de Ré, and guides shipping for La Rochelle past these hazardous rocks into the Pertuis d'Antioche.
