Half-length portrait the Parsi Dadabhai Naoroji (1825-1917), Professor of Mathematics at Elphinstone College, Bombay. Resident in England for much of his career, Naoroji unsuccessfully contested Holborn in the general election of 1886, but became the first Indian M.P. in the United Kingdom Parliament, when he was elected member of Central Finsbury in 1892. A founder member of the Indian National Congress, he served as its President three times, in 1886, 1893 and 1906.
