View looking along the water's edge towards the town, with local boats moored in the shallows and a camp of tents in the foreground: 'In the extreme distance we see the lofty range of mountains which forms the boundary of the Eastern desert on this side...Nearer is the head of the gulf, spreading out on either side of Suez, the view being taken from the eastern shore, opposite the town...The town itself differs in nothing from the small towns on the Nile. It chiefly consists of ruinous houses, with a few newer ones, of Turkish architecture. Along the shore lie numerous boats of the kind used in the navigation of the Red Sea. They are sharp and high in the prow, and still loftier in the stern, but with a single mast, for the support of a huge lateen sail. In this view most of the boats are dismasted, and not one has a sail...In the foreground is the encampment of a European traveller, around which the camels rest, lying or standing, in a semicircle...'
