Tombs in the Eastern Cemetery, Cairo. Photographer: Frith, Francis
- Scope & Content:
-
Inscription: Inscribed in the negative, 'Frisch E. No. 97.'
Genre: Architectural Photography
View of a group of large domed tombs and mosques, with figures and camels in the foreground. The mosques are those of 'the Sultan Barkook, the furthest from the spectator; and that of the Sultan El-Ashraf El-Ghoree, in the centre, which may be distinguished by the small plain minaret, that appears to be quite out of keeping with the elaborate dome attached to it; this circumstance being, perhaps, owing to the Sultan's untimely death...Two other tombs are represented in the photograph; one beyond El-Ghoree's, of a similar character, and the other in the foreground. The latter is evidently of very early date; and it is curious to note the transition from its bold ribbed dome (in this case curiously interlaced, and, therefore, we may suppose, somewhat later than the plain ribs, of which several examples are given in other plates), to the more more elaborate and zigzag pattern of those of Barkook...'
