Island of Elephantine. Photographer: Douglas, James
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
View looking across the channel of the river from Aswan, towards the island: 'The photograph is of the south end of the island, and shews the lower part of the famous Nilometer, a portion of the ancient stone quay, a large granite gateway near the top of the hill, and sundry ruins of temples. All the remainder of this part of the island consists of mounds of rubbish, bricks, and broken pottery, interspersed with sculptured stones and pieces of statues ... Of the Nilometer, as may be seen in the photograph, only the lower part remains; it, however, is still in tolerable preservation, and some of the inscriptions which marked the rise of the Nile, two thousand years ago, are still distinct.'
