View of the elaborate interior of the chapel, looking towards the altar, with the pulpit in the left foreground: 'The church is at once remarkable for its massive grandeur and style ... The church is divided into three aisles by two rows of columns, and at the eastern end of the centre aisle is a large apse, on the vault of which is the well known mosaic. The ends of the side aisles are closed by straight walls, through which are doors leading to two chapels, that of the Holy Fathers on the north, and of St. James, the brother of our Lord, on the south; from either of these access can be obtained to the chapel of the Burning Bush, situated behind the central apse, round which there is a free passage ... The walls are well covered with numerous paintings, more remarkable for their quaintness than their beauty, and from the roof hang lamps, chandeliers, etc. The floor is paved with various kinds of marble, and does not look very old...'
