Genre: Portrait Photography
Mounted on titlepage. Portrait of members of the survey team grouped beside one of the wells at Uyun Musa, at the beginning of their journey from Suez to southern Sinai: 'The first feature of interest met with on the journey south is the oasis of Ayun Musa, the 'springs of Moses,' situated on a slight rise in the plain about two miles from shore and eight or nine below Suez. According to the Bedawin, it marks the traditional site of the landing of the Israelites after their passage through the Red Sea. About a dozen perennial springs of various sizes rise through the soil, some into rudely walled wells, others into wide pools or basins, and furnish a tolerable abundance of somewhat brackish yet fairly palatable water ... The only habitations are a rude shanty or two for the owners of the gardens, and a kind of bungalow or summer-house resorted to by occasional pic-nic parties from Suez' (part I, p. 73). This view is use as a titlepage illustration on all the volumes in the series. See also the duplicate set (with the two additional volumes of photographs) at shelfmark Maps 29.d.28.
