Bronze female head of heroic size. Photographer: Thompson, Stephen
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Fine Arts, Photography of
Close frontal view of the head: 'This beautiful head has doubtless formed part of a statue, which was probably about nine feet. The back of the head and neck have been torn away, and a blow has crushed the metal and one side of the forehead. The eyes, which have been formed either of precious stones or enamels, have perished, and are only represented by hollow sockets ... The style throughout has that largeness and simplicity which is characteristic of the best age of Athenian art, but which we have yet been to study only in marble. The head is the first example of bronze statuary on a large scale which we may venture to assign with confidence to the best period of Greek art. It is evidently an ideal type and has been called Aphrodite, but the expression of the face would accord better with a Victory. The bronze is said to have been found in Thessaly, but no authentic particulars as to its discovery have yet been published. Height, 1 ft. 2 in.'
